We all know how important backups are, and it shouldn’t take a disaster to make anyone understand that. It is important to take backups of your GFI MailEssentials product configurations as, in the event of data loss, GFI cannot recover your configuration.

To do this run meconfigmgr.exe from the GFI MailEssentials installation directory. Then click Export and select a directory to save your configuration to.

If you are using GFI MailEssentials 2012 SR3 build 20121218 or later, then your whitelist, blacklist and reports settings will also be exported.

But are there folders that should be excluded from the antivirus and backup software? Yes there are and we are going to show them to you.

If GFI MailEssentails is installed with (x86) Exchange 2003, then you need to add the following exclusions:
..\Program Files\GFI
..\Program Files\Common Files\GFI
..\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\VSI1

If it is installed with (x64) Exchange 2007:
..\Program Files (x86)\GFI
..\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\GFI
..\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server

If it is installed with (x64) Exchange 2010:
..\Program Files (x86)\GFI
..\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\GFI
..\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14

If you have installed it with (x64) Exchange 2013:
..\Program Files (x86)\GFI
..\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\GFI
..\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15

And finally, if you have installed GFI MailEssentials with IIS Relay (Windows Server 2003, 2008, or 2012) exclude these folders:
..\Program Files (x86)\GFI
..\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\GFI
..\Inetpub\Mailroot\Queue
